On the 17th of June 2017, the central region of Portugal was hit by one of the largest forest fires to ever occur in the country (third largest forest fire of Europe) destroying an area of over thirty-thousand hectares. Fed by strong westerly winds the fire started close to the town of Pedrogrão Grande, rapidly spreading to the municipalities of Figueiró dos Vinhos, Castanheira de Pera, Penela, Pampilhosa da Serra and Sertã, killing 64 people, wounding more than 200 people and creating a trail of destruction with an estimated loss of over 500 million euros.
