Located on the old town of the city of Belém, the "Ver-o-Peso" is a great open air market selling products brought from the Amazon region. Facing the Guarajá Bay, the market has forever established a permanent relationship with the neighbouring islands and the inland towns. During the colonial period, this area was founded in 1627 as the home to the tax collector's main post, called "Casa do Haver-o-peso" ("Have-the-Weight House"), where goods coming from the Amazon forest, river and agriculture were weighted and taxed accordingly by the Portuguese crown. Today, besides the strong economical and historical value, the "Ver-o-Peso" market is, above all, a place of contrasts and intense social and cultural exchange.
While on assignment in the city of Belém do Pará I had a couple of hours to explore te market and enjoy its colour, life and vibe.
